I Need Greenery for My Office: Where Do I Start?

Adding greenery is one of the easiest ways to make an office feel warmer, calmer and more welcoming. Whether you have a small home office, a reception area or a larger workplace, you don’t need to fill every corner with plants to make a difference.

A few well-placed plants at different heights can bring life and softness to the whole space.

Something on a Shelf

Start with a small or medium indoor plant on a shelf, bookcase, reception counter or filing cabinet.

Compact plants such as peperomias, spider plants, birkins, syngoniums, bird’s nest ferns and small peace lilies add a fresh touch without taking over the workspace. Choose a pot that suits your office style-white or neutral for a clean, modern look, terracotta for warmth, or something textured for a softer feel.

For desks and smaller shelves, choose a plant that stays reasonably compact and won’t crowd the space.

Something Hanging or Trailing

A trailing plant adds movement and helps soften shelves, cupboards and harder office lines.

Pothos and heartleaf philodendrons are great choices, with beautiful green vines that can gently trail from a high shelf. You don’t necessarily need to hang a plant from the ceiling (although we LOVE our hanging plant options!) -a trailing plant placed on top of a bookcase or tall cabinet can create the same effect without needing hooks or installation.

For a fuller look, allow the vines to fall naturally. For a neater office style, keep them trimmed back.

Something on the Floor

If you have an empty corner, a larger floor plant can make a big impact.

A ficus, umbrella plant, monstera, large peace lily or indoor palm can add height and help make an office feel more established and inviting. Place it beside a reception desk, near a meeting area or in a corner that needs a little life.

Choose a stylish floor pot or basket that complements the furniture and colours already in the room.

Choose a Style That Suits Your Space

For a clean, modern office, try simple green foliage in matching white, cream or neutral pots.

For a relaxed, natural look, mix leafy plants with terracotta pots, woven baskets and warm textures.

For something more colourful, add a flowering plant such as an orchid or bromeliad to a reception desk or shared area.

You can also mix different leaf shapes while keeping the pots similar. This creates interest without making the office feel cluttered.

Start With Three Plants

If you’re unsure where to begin, try this simple combination:

  • one compact plant on a desk or shelf

  • one trailing plant on a high shelf or cabinet

  • one larger statement plant on the floor

Using greenery at different heights creates balance and makes the whole office feel more considered-even if you only have a few plants.

Before choosing, take note of the natural light available. All plants need some light, even those described as low-light tolerant. Choosing plants that suit your office conditions will help them stay healthy and looking their best.

A little greenery can completely change the feeling of a workspace-making it warmer, more welcoming and simply a nicer place to spend the day.
