Hands up if you love Bunuru/Summer in Perth!!

In Nyoongar (Indigenous West Australian) culture, from Feb-March we are in β€œsecond summer” or Bunuru.

This season definitely has its moments… those 38’+ days are a bit much…

But, in general, we can’t really complain about our stunning beaches on weekends, swimming in a pool/river/dam/ocean, backyard sprinklers (you know you can still do this as an adult right?!), cold showers, icy drinks, loooong sunny days, delicious stone fruit, new exercise schedules, a couple of long weekends, easy-to-wake-up early mornings, and warm evenings that encourage eating outdoors/staying up just a little bit later, gardening with a little extra daylight…

Oh, and let’s not forget a greater appreciation of places with air con. ;)

We love seeing how much our indoor plants push out extra leaves and blooms in this warm weather, and sometimes they seem to double in size overnight!?

I thought it timely (hopefully not too late) to leave you some helpful plant tips for your indoor jungle/potted plants. They may need a little extra attention in this heat- but in return you will definitely notice a LOT of extra growth (and maybe blooms!) in most of your indoor plants!
 

Below the plant care notes I’ve added a bonus β€˜cool’ crafting idea, and a human self-care tip. If you know me personally, you know I’m passionate about this stuff - read on if you’re up for a little reminder that your beautiful body and mind deserve nurturing and attention just as much as your plants!

Our top care tips for your plants in summer:

With Perth’s summer heat in full swing, here are some essential tips to help them stay healthy:

For Indoor Plants:

  • Check drainage – Ensure your pots have proper drainage holes and that they’re not blocked (all our pots come with drainage!)

  • Water more frequently – Due to increased evaporation and the drying heat, your plants may need watering more often-depending on their indoor environment. Be sure to check the soil regularly to ensure it stays moist, but not soggy.

  • Adjust pot positions if necessary – Move your plants around based on the changing light/temp/humidity. A perfect sunny spot in the cold seasons might be a terrible spot in warm seasons - the hot sun through a glass window could could cook/burn your plant quickly!

  • Avoid hot windows – Keep plants away from direct sunlight through windows to prevent leaf burn

  • Be cautious of placing plants directly near air conditioners – These can dry out the leaves and stress your plants

  • Rotate plants – Turn your plants occasionally so all sides receive even light- this is not essential but can be helpful!

  • Do fertilise- but don’t over-fertilise – Light feeding with a liquid fertilizer is best during the summer, to avoid stressing your plants

  • Propagate – Now is the perfect time to take cuttings and grow your own plant collection. If you are propagating in water make sure the vessels are not in full sun by hot windows all through the day as this can damage the newly- forming roots

  • Wipe dust off leaves – Clean leaves gently with a damp cloth to help with photosynthesis and prevent pests- again, not essential (and tough for most of us with our super busy lives) but this can help with more balanced growth!

  • Group plants together – Cluster your pots to create a microenvironment that retains moisture and makes watering easier - we are all about making things easy x

  • Repot if needed – If your plants are outgrowing their pots, now’s a great time to repot- up one size is best

  • Mist regularly – Mist the leaves with a spray bottle to create a more humid, outdoor-like environment

  • Keep an eye out for pests – Troubleshoot asap with natural pest control or manual removal- search online for great natural troubleshooting tips

  • Enjoy the growth – this warm weather is when plants really go crazy with growth, so sit back and enjoy the jungle vibes! Whether it’s one climbing trailing plant, a gorgeous indoor tree, or a shelf/wall full of potted pretties- if you don’t take time to appreciate them, you’re missing out. :)

For Outdoor Plants:

  • Move pots away from the hot afternoon sun if possible – Place potted plants in a spot with some afternoon shade (under trees/shadeloths/behind walls) to avoid heat stress.

  • Create a herb garden in big pots with mulch to protect the roots from drying out – this hot weather is perfect for growing fresh herbs like basil, mint, and parsley. Soo good for dinners/salads- always good to have some extra natural nutrients from fresh homegrown plants.

  • Mulch garden beds – Add a layer of mulch around outdoor plants to keep the soil cool and moist. Bonus if the mulch has manure in it! Stinky but beneficial!

  • Water early or late – Watering thoroughly (water needs to reach those thirsty roots!) in the early morning or late evening reduces evaporation, ensuring your plants get a good drink to survive the heat of our long hot Perth days.

With a little extra attention, your plantsβ€”both inside and outβ€”will survive the Perth summer and reward you with plenty of fresh growth.

Taking a Noticing Nature Walk

We know life can be busy and stressful, but sometimes, the best way to give your mind a break is to take a lil’ walk. It might be a morning stroll with kids/dog or a short walk after work or in your lunch break.. however you can fit one in, let the world around you also slow you down (instead of always winding you up). You might be in the middle of the city, ducking out of the office- there will still be living, growing things to notice. Pay attention to the colours of the trees, flowers, or skyβ€”take a photo of something pretty and send it to a friend, collect a colourful leaf or flower and put it in water on your work desk, or just listen out for sounds of happiness (laughter, birds, wind, running water). These walking breaks offer a chance to breathe, be present, and appreciate the beauty around you. It might be just a little break in your day, but this pause from β€œaction” and work” and the β€œmust-do list” can make all the difference. Happy walking x

β€œBlooms In Ice” Crafting Idea

  • Collect tiny petals and mini blooms during a walk or from your indoor or outdoor garden (little daisies and weed blooms work well)

  • Place them in an ice cube tray, adding water and a bit of submerged string to each compartment.

  • Let them freeze overnight, then pop out the ice cubes and immediately hang the Blooms In Ice outdoors (somewhere that catches the sunlight if possible)

  • Enjoy the view of suspended, shiny, frozen blooms and petals, and take pics for the memories- bonus if you do this with a friend or child- they will LOVE it!
